Store Before the Storm: Preparing for the Hurricane Season
01 June, 2026
Edlyn Ruiz Stoll 949-2837

The Atlantic Hurricane Season has officially begun, and while the 2026 forecast currently indicates a below-average season, it only takes one storm to cause a significant impact. The Water Authority is urging its customers and the wider public to prepare for the season.

The Water Authority is conducting its usual seasonal readiness activities, which focus on protecting its critical assets, such as stored water, pumps, and pipelines, which are all necessary to ensure access to safe drinking water after a storm. Depending on weather conditions, the Authority may need to proactively turn off the water supply before a storm to ensure sufficient water is available after it passes. This is why it is critical that customers store water before a storm approaches.

Ensure you have an emergency 3-day supply of drinking water for every member of your household – that is, 1 gallon per person per day. You should stock more water for vulnerable persons, including infants, pregnant and nursing mothers, and the elderly, as well as for your pets. Additionally, you would store water for non-drinking purposes, such as sanitisation.

Throughout the hurricane season, the Authority will share important preparedness tips on its Facebook and Instagram pages to help you stay prepared. Additionally, guidance and updates can be found on our website www.waterauthority.ky/hurricane-preparedness.
