Water Authority – Cayman recently donated CI$2,500.00 to the George Town Primary School to assist with the construction of a performing arts centre.

PTA President and Fundraising Coordinator Cheyenna Stewart explained that a dedicated performing arts facility is necessary not just to better facilitate annual school productions but also to encourage students to pursue performance art.

“Research has revealed the positive impact of drama on a student’s physical, emotional, social and cognitive development,” Ms. Stewart said. “Drama education instils self-confidence, empathy, cooperation and collaboration, concentration, self-discipline and trust.”

Water Authority Director Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said that the Board consistently strives to give back to educational efforts in the local community.

“The Water Authority believes in developing well-rounded students, that’s why we support educational initiatives across the spectrum from sports to arts and culture,” Dr. Frederick-van Genderen said. “Even if these students do not grow up to pursue careers in fields relevant to the Authority’s work, the whole Cayman Islands community benefits from nurturing confident, passionate, and versatile young people.”

Ms. Stewart explained that the facility’s design will allow classes to meet in smaller groups or expand into an open theatre for larger performances when necessary.

“The centre will expand the size of the already existing hall and can actually allow all of our parents and family members to attend our performances at Christmas time without having to separate the evening between the infants and juniors. We are also installing a video recording and new sound and lighting systems that will allow top notch performances and recordings of those performances,” she said. “This state of the art facility will benefit our children for generations to come.”
