Water Authority – Cayman is pleased to announce Pierre Ordonez as this year’s recipient of the Authority’s Annual Scholarship.

Every year the Authority offers a scholarship of up to CI$30,000 to a suitably qualified Caymanian to obtain an undergraduate academic or technical/vocational degree or diploma in a field of study relevant to the Authority’s work.

Mr. Ordonez has spent the past three summers as an intern with the Water Authority and remained with the Authority on a temporary contract as of September 2017 as Student Engineering Assistant. In January 2018, he will commence a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Kansas State University.

Mr. Ordonez explained that his lifelong passion for creating things led him to pursue an Associate of Science Degree in Engineering Technology from the University College of the Cayman Islands, which he successfully completed in November 2017. Mr. Ordonez said that his three summer internships with the Authority helped confirm his passion for engineering.

“At the Water Authority there are so many different career options and they offer engineering as well so I figured I had to check it out,” he explained. “I came, I liked it and I came back two more times after that, and now I’m the scholarship recipient. I’ve gained so much experience from it and I know for sure now that engineering is what I want to do.”

In his role as Student Engineering Assistant with the Authority, Mr. Ordonez worked primarily with the Wastewater Treatment team maintaining and operating the Authority’s state-of-the-art Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Water Authority Director Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said that the Authority was proud to continue to support Mr. Ordonez in achieving his educational and career goals.

“Mr. Ordonez has proven himself a dedicated and passionate member of the Authority’s Engineering Services department through his work with the Wastewater Treatment team, and we are honoured to support his continuing education,” Dr. Frederick-van Genderen said. “We look forward to him returning to work with the Authority in the future.”

The Authority will begin accepting applications for the 2018 Scholarship early next year and the deadline for applications will close on 31 March, 2018. For more information about applying for the Authority’s Annual Scholarship, please visit www.waterauthority.ky/scholarships-how-to-apply.
